Bob Hope actor Tony Audenshaw has revealed he has experienced sleeping rough before getting involved in a homelessness storyline in Emmerdale.
The actor has revealed he could not afford to star in a BnB when he worked in Thorpe Park back in the 1980s, so was forced to sleep in his car in order to make ends meet.
His character Bob was kicked out by his girlfriend before he was sacked, and he struggled to get money togehter enough to stay in a bedsit.
But his character has come to a shocking end when he was found out on a park bench, suffering from severe hypothermia.
On Loose Women today, Bob revealed to the panel: “I used to work at Thorpe Park, the theme park, I use to be the Thorpe Park rangers and do the voices. Up North things are much cheaper. I came down here in the 80s, and it was £70 for a BNB.
“If I was down for five nights I would sleep in the car, because I didn’t have much money coming in.
“I’d never do it two nights on the trot because you couldn’t really function well. It was Monday in a B&B, Tuesday in the car – the things you saw in those car parks, torches in the window.”
Tony said he felt the show had dealt “subtly” with homelessness storyline, adding: “This thing can happen to anybody. He did have an affair and he feels guilty and because of that he doesn’t want to ask for help. He has got himself in a situation where he has no money.
“He is coping, and it just gets harder and harder. It’s been subtly played, he’s lost his job, the break up, and his money.”
Many fans of the show have shown their care and concern for Bob, blaming his troubles with Laurel Thomas and Brenda as the reason for his issues.
One said: “# Emmerdale Laurel is partly to blame as she rendered Bob homeless when they separated, but Brenda is mostly to blame as she kicked him out after she let him stay and he tried it on with her and took the business and kids away from him.”
Another said: “I think # Emmerdale deserve a lot of praise for raising awareness for how homeless people can end up in this cold weather. This has been a great well written storyline for Bob. Thank you @ emmerdale”
Emmerdale airs weekdays at 7pm and again at 8pm on Thursdays on ITV.
